What Is Shungite and Why Do People Keep It Near Their Devices?

Phones stay close. Laptops remain open for hours. Wireless networks run in the background day and night. For most people, removing technology isn’t realistic, so attention shifts to the immediate surroundings instead.

One object that increasingly appears in these spaces is shungite.

Why This Stone Attracted Attention

Shungite is a carbon-rich mineral found in the Karelia region of Russia. Scientific interest grew after fullerene molecules were identified within its structure — spherical carbon formations studied in material science for their unusual stability and behaviour.

That discovery didn’t turn the stone into equipment, but it did change how people looked at it. A geological material became something associated with interaction rather than decoration.

From there, curiosity spread beyond laboratories.

How It Entered Everyday Use

Once the composition became widely discussed, shungite started appearing outside research contexts. People began placing small pieces in the same locations where daily device use happens:

• beside a keyboard
• near a charging phone
• on a bedside table
• worn during long computer sessions

The stone wasn’t displayed — it stayed put.
Its role was simply presence.

Fixed Location or Worn

A clear pattern formed. Most people didn’t collect multiple pieces or move them around. They chose one position and kept it consistent.

Some preferred a stationary piece at their workspace.
Others wore a bracelet or pendant so the location never changed as they moved between home, office, and travel.

In both cases, the purpose was continuity rather than interaction.

From Mineral to Routine Object

Over time the stone stopped feeling like a specimen and became part of a setup — similar to a watch, notebook, or pen that always stays in reach.

The association with electronics came from behaviour, not instruction. People placed it near the devices they used most and left it there.

A Material Within a Digital Environment

Shungite now sits in a space between geology and habit. Scientific curiosity introduced it, and personal use defined how it remained.

It isn’t operated or adjusted.
It’s kept nearby.

Each Sanshara piece is made from genuine shungite and hand-finished so natural variations in surface and texture remain visible.
